FUNCTIONAL NANOMATERIALS RESEARCH LABORATORY

FNRL is the State of the art World class Research Laboratory at Department of Physics,  IIT Roorkee established by Professor Davinder Kaur and his team of Research Scholars to Fabricate Thin Film based Nanostructures for various device applications.

These include RF/DC Magnetron sputtering and Multi- Chamber Excimer Laser based Pulsed Laser Deposition  (Lambda Physik, KrF) system with the facility to deposit Nanocrystalline powder, thin films and multilayers, heterostructures of functional nanomaterials. These fabrication facilities have been designed and developed in-house with the help of Native vendors to promote the ‘Make in India’ concept of the Country. The research lab has also been equipped with other world class research facilities such as Cryogen free Vibrating Sample magnetometer (VSM) with Superconducting magnet for magnetic characterization of thin films and devices in the magnetic field of upto 5 Tesla and temperature range of 4K-1000K, Nanoindentor for measuring mechanical properties of nanocoatings, Electrical Characterization System for semiconductor devices,  Dielectric/Ferroelectric/Piezoelectric Characterization Set Up, Electrochemical workstation for electrochemical energy storage and hydrogen-oxygen evolution studies, Vector Network Analyzer for characterization of Microwave Devices. These facilities have been created with the help of sponsored research grants received from various funding agencies such as Ministry of Information Technology (MIT), Department of Science & Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).  Professor Kaur has completed more than dozen sponsored research Projects related to various industries.

Our research focuses on deep understanding of  processes & properties of nanoscale thin films of functional materials and implementation of this understanding for improvement of devices useful in Energy, MEMS and Memory applications.
